Comics of the Day

Worst: All the white space makes this very unappealing visually. Couldn't they have drawn some trees or bushes or something to break it up? And the joke isn't good either.

Runners-up: For Better or For Worse, Mother Goose and Grimm, Brewster Rockit: Space Guy!, Garfield

Best: This might be the upset of the year. I normally hate Brevity (and all the one panel comics for that matter). This one made me smile though. It's cute, it's a little funny, and it makes sense, any one of those would make this better than normal for Guy & Rodd, but all three make it a winner.

Runners-up: Get Fuzzy, Prickly City, Candorville, Pooch Cafe, Baby Blues

Comics of the Day

Worst: This generally works better when Stephen Pastis does it, because he's funny. Introducing a character for a joke or two is difficult, because if it's not a good joke, the character serves no purpose.

Runners-up: Tank McNamara, Rhymes with Orange, Close to Home, Hagar the Horrible, Family Circus

Best:
Just a great strip.

Runners-up: Watch Your Head

Comics of the Day

Worst:Because nothing is funnier than a recycled joke.

Runners-up: Mother Goose and Grimm (another recycled joke), Rhymes with Orange, Speed Bump (jokes about the latest trend are rarely funny, especially if the trend is five years old)

Best:

Typical Lio. Clever idea, nice drawing.

Runners-up: Agnes, Pooch Cafe, Pickles, Sherman's Lagoon, Mutts

Comics of the Day

Worst:Some movies have the names of foods in the title. It's not funny though.

Runners-up: Frank and Ernest, Blondie, Dennis the Menace, Red and Rover, Mother Goose and Grimm

Best:

No great comics today. Pooch Cafe had a pretty good pun, so I went with them. Someone's got to win after all.
Runners-up: Dilbert (this is what Dilbert is capable of, a joke that does not revolve around the stupidity of Dilbert's co-workers), Beetle Bailey (actually uses the military setting to be topical!), Baldo, Garfield (I liked the visual of Odie demonstrating the clean and jerk motion, the silent penultimate panel loses points though)

State of the Blog

I seem to have bitten off more than I can chew by focusing on the entire Washington Post. There are many days when I don't even really have time to read the Post, let alone come up with an intelligent response to anything in it. So I'm restricting my focus to the comics. My goal is to write about the best and worst comics for all 365 days of 2008. This should be a manageable goal, as long as I stay on top of it. I also hope to track the number of times each comic appears as a best, worst, or runner-up, and amuse myself with this information. Wish me luck.
