Not Sure What to Make of this One Edition (Apr. 4)

Worst:
As is all too common with Brevity, this makes no sense. Guy and Rodd take a random situation and assume it's funny.

Runners-up: Garfield, Hagar the Horrible, Speed Bump

Best:
Poncho is a great character, and that is what drives this strip.

Runners-up: Frazz, Lio, Mother Goose and Grimm, Piranha Club, Sally Forth (cynical and charming, I enjoyed it)

Comics Note:
I enjoyed Mother Goose and Grimm today, despite the outdated boom-box reference. Pop culture references by adults usually fall flat, but the image of Castro dancing with his boxers hanging out was so absurd I enjoyed it.

Metanote: I have a lot of catching up to do, so I decided to just keep going with the current strips rather than getting bogged down in the backlog. I will do catch up posts for all the days I missed, but it's not going to get done until my weekend (Sunday-Tuesday).

Comics of the Day

Worst: This strip typifies what I hate about Brevity. The joke is all about an odd non-sequiter moment. They've taken an object that does not fit in a situation, and put it in that situation. Randomness is not a substitute for cleverness.

Runners-up: Frank and Ernest, Mother Goose and Grimm, Mutts

Best:

As funny as anything else in the paper, and it has the best art.

Runners-up: Lio, Watch Your Head

Worst: Unappealing visual and bizarre joke that makes little sense. Classic Brevity.

Runners-up: Mother Goose and Grimm, Blondie, Curtis, Baldo (Baldo says it's a cheese pizza, but it clearly has pepperoni on it, sloppiness like that all but guarantees a worst runner-up), Beetle Bailey

Best: What sold me on this strip is Chazz's assumption of Poncho's scheming in the last panel.

Runners-up: Pearls Before Swine, Watch Your Head, Baby Blues, Zits, Lio, Red and Rover

Comics of the Day

Worst: All the white space makes this very unappealing visually. Couldn't they have drawn some trees or bushes or something to break it up? And the joke isn't good either.

Runners-up: For Better or For Worse, Mother Goose and Grimm, Brewster Rockit: Space Guy!, Garfield

Best: This might be the upset of the year. I normally hate Brevity (and all the one panel comics for that matter). This one made me smile though. It's cute, it's a little funny, and it makes sense, any one of those would make this better than normal for Guy & Rodd, but all three make it a winner.

Runners-up: Get Fuzzy, Prickly City, Candorville, Pooch Cafe, Baby Blues

Brevity is one of the worst strips in the paper. It seems like Guy & Rodd choose some random topic (My other car is... bumper stickers!) and do whatever it takes to come up with a joke, no matter how little sense it makes.

Another win for Agnes. The line about squirting out eggs clinched it for me. While you don't read Agnes for the art, I like how Tony Cochran expresses Trout's sarcasm with some well placed eye-rolling.

Runners-up: Sally Forth (the joke about paying someone not to play music is rather trite, but the song lyrics made me smile), Big Nate (Jenny's got quite a shove)
